What happens when Media is Gone...

Hello everyone, Hope you having a great day. So lets talk about what will happen if the media disappears. I am talking about this subject because there is a possibility that it could happen, if the terrorists so-decide this. I am exploring this topic due to a show I watched on the military channel. Its called Future weapons. Do you happen to know what an Electro-magnetic pulse is? Also known as an EMP? This is a weapon that the U.S. currently possesses. This is a weapon that has no fire, no danger to humans directly, but could cause devastation to the U.S. and world. With one click of a button and the weapon makes a click sound and everything electronic goes out. The circuits are fried to anything that has electronic, from computers to cellphones to cars.

How does it affect the entire US? If it launched around the center of the U.S. 500 miles above the surface the EMP would spread through the entire US. This is a scary concept shutting down all power to anything that is going. Making all electronics completely useless, and the show went on to say that if the EMP would go off at that height, it would takes months to years to regain things. Every bodies social security and documents and money would be gone. They also said it would affect billions of dollars if a small one went off in the stock market at NY.

So my question to you as a reader are what are you comments on what you think would happen if there was no tv, cellphone, or cars for months at a time. I think the US would break out in riots, and widespread panic, There isn’t a way to broadcast what has happened. People who are in the unknown are the ones who cause widespread panic. I think the US would be dropped to its knees, unless they secretly are prepared for this kind of thing. Which I believe they are, They also went on to say that we are the only ones currently in use of this technology.

Its amazing how the future weapons could drop the media to ground.

Does twitter, facebook, and myspace help keep people informed?

Hello everyone, I hope that your week was as great as mine, finishing up almost all my homework and preparing for finals. Today we’re going to talk about something im addicted to. No, it isn’t drugs, its facebook, and its friends Twitter and Myspace. We are going to discuss if they help keep people buying things. Looking at them with media eyes and how much they advertise inside of each and every little space of web they own.

So lets start with twitter, taking a closer look, the page itself doesn’t seem to be doing too much advertising. I don’t really seemed to be bombarded until I start subscribing to peoples tweets. These include president Obama, and several recording rap artists and Tila Tequila. Once you subscribe to these people, you are bombarded with when their concert dates are, new cds are coming out to when they are going to be on Jay Leno. I believe this is their way of advertising, and can be overwhelming if you subscribe to too many people.

Facebook is what im addicted to, and they have adds everywhere, they are mostly on the top of the screen and the right. They are never really overbearing as much as they are there to inform you of their products. I enjoy facebook very much as there is no spam on my walls, nothing too overbearing besides it being on the side of my information.

Myspace is a different story, anyone and their dog has a myspace account. They are allowed to modify myspace in to a degree in which it can only have your name, to so many pictures and adds and music that your computer will not even load it. They have spam bots that go from profile to profile to get you to come to their website to buy products. You never add new friends unless you specifically know them, because they might end up giving you a virus.

Myspace has too many adds, Twitter is great unless you are subscribed to too many people such as artists etc. While facebook has the win with only stationary adds that you have to click on to see and is more person to person.

These are the wins in my book. Signing out (FOREVER) Yay ..

Media is necessary...

Hey everyone, I just got back from paddlefishing, and unfortunately i have caught anything yet, and will have to wait until Wednesday to go out and have another try. This actually brings me to my topic, media is necessary. The reasoning behind this, we need the media to tell us what is new, what is going on in the world, and also how many paddlefish have been caught, so i can get out their and catch my fish before the 1000 limit is close. Around Williston on May 1st they start announcing how many paddlefish have been caught about every 6 hours, as their are people from many different states, and they announce this on the daily news, across radio, and the paper (with a picture of some lucky guy and the big fish). We need media to stay informed, and be on top of world news, local news, and my favorite new products such as movies and items.

They also use media to advertise for stores, as we all know we switch the channel once the bulk of commercials comes across the radio. There is a new ice cream store opening in town, serving new things, I finally heard about them on the radio because they are giving free sundaes away on Sunday! Information and Advertising are key in media, then we go to the recreational side, which can be unnecessary. Like my favorite tv show Heroes, it isnt necessary, but i sure do like it a lot. We get back to why media is necessary, the sole point is to stay informed about what is going on around us. The recreation is a plus, the tube makes its money from commercials, and the rest is considered information to keep citizens in the know, especially my paddlefish count when the season opens. It's been about 3 days and they are already in the 200's meaning only a couple of days left to get out their and not procrastinate.

Flood Media

Hello, fellow refugee's, i hope your having as much fun as I am just being at a complete online college. Some people may not like this, but I would have to say, that they are complaining because they have never taken an online class or their teacher has never taught online. Those are two things i seem to be gathering from my friends at VCSU from facebook/twitter. Would you rather be at campus and have to use porta potties? Plus, there are many schools are based of Internet only classes, I mean, Id like to get my degree in criminal justice ONLINE!!

After the little rant, Ill finally get to the title of the article. This would be the flood, and all the media attention it is getting. There is a video out on MSNbc, which states that we are a great school, and such a tech savvy school, that we alone, are the best to handle such a situation. This is helping get out positive media about VCSU (free advertising) which is awesome for VCSU. Advertising costs lots, we have billboards all over ND, which cost 1200$ and signed into a contract. To show how much media they are getting, A friend that used to go to valley two years ago, (from Alaska) said she heard about it on the news! Alaska, now thats some media!

I have watched everything i can find out about VCSU and have never seen any negative media. They have got the football team on TV, to Brian Dalhberg, our tech savvy guy from Valley who is helping teachers if they have any questions about online classes. We are showing great promise for a small school, and rather wonder if the people who pay the bill for recruiting kids, would have it any other way.

The only thing that i can imagine is that people believe the city is in ruins, and would not be worth coming to, or that the flood happened, and may happen again next year. They never really shared the sewer thing, or the cancelling of every sport for the summer. So I cannot seem to think of anything that has given VCSU a negative image. We're a tech savvy school with a future! ;)

Should they be banned?

Well hi, yes it just so happens to Easter Sunday, and here I am taking time away from my family and friends so I can come write a blog on the Internet! YAY!

So this week, we can cover just about anything, and mine is going to be Fireworks and should they be illegal to own (unlike some states). I am pro-fireworks guy, as I build my own, and am part of several groups for the safe use of fireworks. So, for anyone who thinks they should be illegal, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Well, the first thing people come to say on why they should be banned, is they're DANGEROUS. I will agree with this statement, but this gives you no action to ban something for this reason alone. Anything is dangerous when used in a different matter than appropriate. I use drano to unclog my sink, not to drink (thats dangerous). I use my car to drive from A to B, but not to hit walls, objects, or go above the speed limit, Thats Dangerous. I use a can of Duster to clean my computer keyboard, not inhale to get high (that can kill you). The point is, Anything can be dangerous if used in an inappropriate manner. If you need more examples, I have Many many more.

The second, They're loud! This is another thing I can agree with you on. Fireworks are loud, but so is that barking dog that you keep outside all night! The thing with fireworks, in almost every state, they are only available for purchase for only two weeks, the week before July 4th and the week during. Anything other than those two weeks requires a city permit for display which your town has approved of, and strict guidelines are set that they are done before midnight, away from houses, et cetera. Its not like fireworks last all night long, for the most part :)...

Thirdly, Fire!! Yes, fireworks cause fires, this applies to the common sense and used appropriately field. It is illegal to buy/sell/light fireworks in city limits (for buildings that might start on fire) If you light them in-town, your breaking the law, using them inappropriately. During the season, it gets hot, easily starts fires outside of town, your weather channel may set a fire ban if its too dry and may start a fire, which must be abided by.

So far, I think i have covered every Major issue with fireworks on why they are banned in some states. If fireworks are used in an appropiate manner with some common sense and safety, they are an art form that IS appreciated by the masses.

We Depend on Action

Hello Action Fans, I hope your week has been as great as mine, After seeing the anticipated show Knowing, I was even more excited to see the new Fast and Furious: New Model Original Parts which stars Vin Diesel, by far one of the leading action stars. Then after this we get home at 3 AM and my friend sends me a link to the brand new Wolverine movie, which isn’t even supposed to be released until May 1st. I am actually excited to see the person who gets prosecuted for leaking a multi-million dollar action movie a whole month before it is even released. So my week has been great, seeing great films that I have been waiting for for months. It may seem that I am blabbing on about a couple of films that I just liked a lot. Well here is how it is relates to our class of Media!

Well, I live in a small college town, thus the theaters get movies months after they release. Can I wait this long for a movie that I really want to see? Heck no, I called Fargo West Acres, (which is almost underwater) and asked if they had the midnight showing because Fast and Furious is a huge film and they didn’t, and I was ready to pay premium and drive 60 miles out of my way to see it on an Ultra screen, which is just a little bit bigger than the rest, maybe a little clearer, im not sure. The story goes, I called Jamestown, and they did indeed have a midnight showing, so we drove there. We pre-bought our tickets at 9 pm, along with several other Fast and Furious fans. We showed up at 11:15 and the theater was ¾ full and we still got somewhat crappy seats.

What I am addressing here is the fact that people have a media dependency problem, If they are willing to show up that early and wait this long, on work nights and school nights just to see a film that lasts way into the night. I have yet to see a long line for a movie like P.S. I love you, or some lovey dovey movie. Why is it that action films that lure such a huge crowd and people are willing to lose sleep, pay extra and go the distance for? I believe it’s the wait and our want it now society, I have known about Fast and Furious for months now, and from previous movies, I knew it would be a good movie. While others, it would be the hype the media gives the movie, from actors saying it’s the best movie they’ve ever been in, to showing the One and Only amazing action scene in the entire movie. Waiting for something you cant have, makes you want it that much more, and makes you willing to pay/do whatever it takes to get it. An example, I have been waiting for Harry potter, as well as many others, im sure, I will be in line with the rest of the dressed up geeks to see this movie.

This leads me to people who ruin this, which I may get into later when I research it, to whomever released the new Wolverine movie, I would like to see them go down in flames, but further proves my point, someone is willing to risk their job and prison just to get the movie out before the release date. Now that its out, I have seen it, maybe not in theater quality, (but damn good) I will not be in line for this movie or pay to see it.

This concludes my related issue on media dependency and action films.

Knowing Raw when you see it

Well hello world, Im sure you have been having as much fun as me helping fight the flood in Fargo and surrounding areas. Now that the river is receding its time to get back to work and back to reviewing movies and how their action is affecting lives everywhere. Last time we had talked about The Watchmen. Its been a couple of weeks and its now time to talk about the newer action films. This week, on the list, is Knowing. The movie stars Nicolas Cage, which is one of my favorite action stars. We have already discussed how the celebrities can affect how well the movie sells. I must say Mr. Cage had a huge deal with me going to see this movie.

On the other hand, the show, if you saw any previews was a Doomsday scenario. The man finds a list of numbers that was buried in the 1950's and after 50 years he decodes the numbers to find out the list gives the exact date, location, and how many people die in a huge disaster, whether they are plain crashes or earthquakes. Its an action thriller that puts you on the edge of your seat, with some NEW sorts of action, full in-depth view of plane crashes, that made my jaw drop. While he is trying to save/divert these disasters he finds out the girl who made the list has somehow passed this gift on to his own son (the discoverer of the letter). Following him through these disasters while trying to figure out how they know these dates are nail-biting to say the least.

This movie is based off the Nostradamus and Mayans who predict the world ending, "knowing" the future and the major disasters. I am very weary when December 21st of 2012 of what will happen. This movie was sort of a remake to this extent, never mentioning Nostradamus and the Mayans or their stuff, but the scenario of it. They show what happens when a huge city finds out by word of mouth about a widespread world ending, riots, stealing, chaos in its true form.

This movie is new and different for the so called "sci-fi" action it leans towards, and the action scenes are just amazing. The action is raw, fast, and End of the World. This makes a good action film now days based on what we've previously talked about. The newer genre's of action are coming into play, and to define this, i would have to say one word. Raw, showing every detail of a disaster and how things are instead of sugarcoating things so people can stomach them.

So to sum it up, the movies are getting less censored, and we the people Love it. I will recommend the move Knowing to anyone. So now that we've seen a little bit of sci-fi and lets start looking at whats coming up. Fast and Furious is coming out this Friday, and I have already bought my ticket from movietickets.com Lets see where the newest car racing action is headed.

Until next week, Rent a movie, and grab some popcorn.

Points of View

So lately we have been talking about heroes and villains. How most people like to see heroic movies and never like to see villains win, and how lately the villains have been winning in movies, and they are still best sellers, and that maybe we are changing as a society. I was having a discussion with a fellow movie buff that brought up something that i thought should be brought up. This would be the point of view, The point of view of the person watching of the superhero, villain, determines, who the superheros and villains are. I had never really had a full dosage of this kind movie. Yet, The watchmen, which i was there an hour and half before hand, sold out three theatres two days before it opened for a midnight showing, showed me point of view like ive never seen it before.

So lets get into what the point of view is, its defined as a mental position from which things are viewed, and this basically says that you should look at things from how others would see them. Everyone has their own point of view, the hard thing to do is, open up, and notice the other views, and realize they are there, they are possibility.

"SPOILER"
Now how does it work into The Watchmen, Action Films, etc. An example, in the watchmen, One of the "superheroes' has gone bad and is trying to nuke New York City, Everyone is trying to stop him because he is going to kill 3 million or however many live in New York. Well, This man succeeds in destroying New York, but in doing this, he prevents the imminent nuclear war between USA and Russia by blaming the Nuclear attack on the superhero who has radioactive power.

Now the thing is, I see him as a villain, he killed millions, he destroyed a city, he is a villain. My movie buff friend states he is the true superhero of the movie because he saved the world from nuclear war between USA and Russia. I dont believe killing millions to save billions counts as a superhero. Or is classified as one, He is still the villain in my eyes, but there is where we got into an argument about the point of view, and it really depends on the person watching it. The Watchmen is perfect for this, because every single character superhero/villain is either point of view chosen either side, they are only on one side because that person has Chosen to put them there.

Point of View is amazing and I cant believe I haven't noticed it had a huge impact on our decisions on how good or bad a movie is.

So lets Review The Watchmen,

Overall, Great movie, Im not going to throw it up to the amazing section though. It did have amazing costumes, good fight scenes, and graphics. Although, as a guy, and it being rated R, I think they overused Dr. Manhatten's Big Blue Penis a little bit, they could have covered it for at least 1/4 of the show. I mean it is comic book show for kids, they will eventually see it. They did have a sex scene that lasted a little longer than expected, once again, this is probably going to be seen by kids at one time. Other than that, It was a Great Adult film, but I dont believe it was worth Pre-ordering my tickets through movie.tickets.com or the hype of selling out three theatres that Thursday night at midnight. I Will however recommend this movie to anyone over the age of 14 or mature enough to see a penis on screen for 2 hours.

Heroes to Villains

So now that we have discussed a little bit about heroes and some more about villains. Lets talk about the HUGE blockbuster coming out this weekend. I must confess, my media dependency has taken control over me, and i have pre-ordered my ticket so I can watch this movie on the "ultra screen". I am driving an hour and going to sit in line JUST for this movie! What is this movie you might ask?

The Watchmen, based off of a comic book the movie dives in the superheros and villains. I ha vent read the comic at all and have no background on the movie whatsoever, yet I am excited. This is another new genre that is coming to the screens that we do not see much of. If you have seen some of the commercials it is about the superheros being casted out - hated- by the normal human race. One of the lines from the movie is, The world will look up and shout "Save us!" And I'll whisper "No." This is a superhero flick where the superheros are faced with the decision to stay the hero or fall into what society wants and become a villain. The world is about to end and its all who will save the world, if the world casted out those who can save it?

There are movies like this where the hero has to decide but in these, there is someone to stop them, what is going to happen, when all the heroes have gone bad, and there is nobody to save them. This hasn't been done to my recollection, a near example was a animated flick recently let out called The Incredibles, even in this movie, the superheroes, still remained "good natured" when they were cast out.

Most people do not enjoy sad ending movies, nor movies where the villain wins, I mean, Did the majority enjoy it when Hitler was on top? With the expansion of Valkyrie and now this, I am starting to see this trend change. I may be completely wrong about this movie, what i know about it is complete hype and a little background Ive looked into. Is the Desensitization theory that we're learning about in media class really starting to work. Do we enjoy seeing others fail, become corrupt, the signs are pointing to a yes. This is vastly different from the generation that didn't like to see a toilet on TV, Have we passed that teetering scale of good vs bad, Hero and Villain, Which do we like to see happen more. The next couple of months may decide these things.

Needless to say, if you haven't noticed it yet, I am Excited for The Watchmen. I will update next week and discuss the heroes and villains in the flick. Maybe they never fall into the villain side ...

Villains

I stand corrected on my last statement, there is a movie where the villain wins. It is not yet on DVD but still in theatres. In this movie the villain is not the main character but wins in the end, and even going to see the movie i knew the outcome but I still figured it would make a decent a movie. The movie is about Hitler, and for those of you who do not know what movie i am talking about, it is Valkyrie.

The movie, which stars Tom cruise, is about an assassination attempt on Hitler, but we all know Hitler kills himself when he is surrounded by the allies, so we know the outcome of this movie, but i found myself thrown into this movie, cheering him on, hoping it works, but knowing it does not. For more followup information and pictures you can visit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0985699/

This movie is a rare commodity, leaving me with a sense that the villain has won. I find myself asking if this is something we should try to explore, just having the villains win? I personally did not enjoy the ending, even when i knew it was coming. Left me feeling that there should still be something done, someone should be doing something about this "villain" and not let him do this, and leaving me unsatisfied and unhappy with the movie. The villain cannot win, I have been brainwashed that the happy ending is coming, but for this man it is not. There will not be revenge or a Valkyrie 2.

This leads me to believe that this movie would become a flop and nobody would watch once the word got out along the unsatisfying ending. Then i found an article on the Internet about why it didnt flop here http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/2008/12/30/2008-12-30_sorry_haters_tom_cruises_valkyrie_not_a_.html which pretty much explains that because Tom cruise is a star, that his fan base made this a hit. Im not sure which way to go with this, i dont believe that it all factored in on Tom's side, but maybe a portion of it did.

Villains winning is not the way to go, we like to keep ourselves happy, and content, which makes us believe those fairy tales. I do believe this was a nice change of pace, but i do not know if the mainstream is ready for the villains to win.

H-E-R-O ?

Hello all, Now that we have learned a little bit about the elements and compounds about the everyday action film, we are going to talk about heroes. A hero is basically in every film or movie that has ever been made. This is someone that the audience likes and can relate to and usually this person has to choose between good and bad. The definition from www.dictionary.com states a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

Some films are harder than others to distinguish the heroes because they can be perceived as the bad person throughout the entire film and then make the one last decision that makes them good. This can also relate to every person's perspective of the film as well. An example of this is someone thinking that Jigsaw in the movies Saw is a Hero because he is trying to save some one's life and stop them from making bad choices, while other just seem him as a killer.

Going back to the original purpose of this blog is to review tuesday action films, recently I have discovered a television series that goes along with this topic. Brilliantly named Heroes, and in this series they go through several different peoples lives and show how they themselves can use their "gift" to become a Hero or they can use it for others things that do not include the above definition. I have become addicted to this show because it shows how people react and their choices in real life can and will affect others, and, of course, a little sci-fi thrown in with a lot of action makes for a great tv series.

Now that we have covered a little bit about heroes, we can continue next week on why there are No movies, at least none that i know right now, where the Villains is the main character, just causing havoc, and wins in the end.

Elements and Components

Hi there bloggers, It has been brought to my attention that nobody really knows anything about action films, the basics, also known as that little chart we learned in english about hamlet and when the climax is and what to expect out of action movies, so in today's week we will learn the basics of film genre's. I would especially like to thank http://www.filmsite.org/genres.html for the following information that i have rewritten for plagarism purposes!

Action films are jam packed with energy, very expensive physical stunts and chases. These Usually consist of at least one of the following: rescues, battles, fights, escapes, which usually involve something destructive which can towns flooding, asteroids, bombs, or fires. Something that is keep you on the edge of your seat non-stop heartpounding thrill ride.

Now that these are added in, we must have a conflict, and this usually consist of a good guy versus a bad guy, also known as hero and villain for you batman lovers. These are design to give the audience a escapism effect. An example of this would be James Bond (supposedly fantasy)
that has to do with the spy/espionage programs. These include the hero knowing martial arts very well and always winning.

Now that we have covered some of the elements of an action film, lets discuss the components. These consist of a couple of different things. This may also be called the plot? It has the introduction where the characters are introduced, the conflict, where we find out what the problem is, the Climax is where there is a point of no return, an example in the movie Bangkok Dangerous, where he decides to stop being an assasin and kill the men that hired him to protect the girl he likes. Then there is the resolution, finding out what happens, does the villain live another day? Does the Hero die ? does the Girl die? All Action films are based off of this, as EVERY movie is in my opinion,

What type of action, like an asteroid or an explosion just defines what type of movie it is and try to get people interested. They all use one of the previously discussed for the most part. Sure, they may throw an opening explosion into the beginning before the characters are introduced, but i assure you this is just to grab audience attention.

That is what the Plot of a action movie is, which may be tweaked for audience preference. These are things that every movie must have otherwise the movie falls apart, we were taught this in high school.

Good day media lovers

Where Is the West?

The good ole days of the western movies are disappearing. Ive noticed there are no longer advertisements for John Wayne, a Legend, someone my mother is obsessed with, trust me, she owns all 59 different plate paintings of him.

Good news though fellow movie followers, i have a Great Movie for you to watch if you like westerns and it is by far the best i have seen since 3:10 to Yuma. Even thought some didnt even really like that movie. This movie has all the old day lovestory in it but still all the gunslinging action! I never heard of it either, until i accidently rented it this last weekend. Appaloosa - Yes, weird, i know, its the name of the small town where Virgil Cole and his hired hand Emmerrit take on a band of thugs that try to overrun it. The movie tends to go long and you may think its over several times, but its NOT! It keeps going on with the story, but it still never disappoints, and i must say, i watched it twice, and im not a Huge western fan.

The movie doesnt have the gore factor like the new action flicks do, but yes, people are being shot, and the movie is based off of one man trying to outrun the noose. Im glad to see that western films are making a comeback or are trying to, and when they do, they are Good films, not corny, and unoriginal. I would recommend this film to anyone, and to anyone that likes western films, you would not be disappointed if you bought it.

Im still working on getting Lakeview Terrace.
Goodbye Media Lovers....

Bangkok Dangerous

This movie was very hyped but did not do well in theatres and now is full well ON DVD! Nicolas Cage being one of my favorite actors plays an assasin payed for a job that goes horribly awry. Meanwhile finding the love of his life in a town he will no longer be allowed to live in the same town or better yet, know what he does for a living. For pictures and a full rundown on the movie follow the link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814022/.

My personal opinion of the movie was that it was decent, there was twist about his girlfriend that you will need to watch to find out about that really surprised me. On the other hand if Nicolas Cage wasnt in this movie I would never even bother give it a second look. It is has some decent action but is SLOW through most of it, more of a love story than an hitman movie.

Im going to keep doing the movie reviews to keep it interesting, and people tuned in, but for the sake of the media class, I must question what is action coming to nowdays with movie nowdays. If the movie isnt full of death and murders we are no longer interested. I have noticed when renting movies nowdays everything is turning to unrated. This isnt because of nudity, it is because of the gore. If the action movie doesnt have it, it isnt good. In class we discussed how people were appaled when they saw a lady get their head chopped off back when. Now we Crave this and they are coming up with new ways to do it without bluntly just showing it. Such as Saw 5 or the guy getting splattered in Death Race.

This is a scary road we're heading down, anyways, Tune in Next week for Lakeview Terrace!

The newest action movies this Tuesday!

This tuesday the big hit that came finally came to dvd full of action was Max Payne. The movie with the star Mark Wahlberg as a cop trying to get the bottom of a series of murders in New York City. The movie is based off of a game that came out years ago for xbox that is known for "bullet time" where he can dodge bullets. The movie has a little bit of sci-fi in it with lots of gun fights which make it a decent action film.

After a little background on the movie my opinion of the movie was to give it a 3 out of 5. I have played the game and was definately looking forward to the movie when it came out. They added the sci-fi stuff in the movie to keep an audience and attract people which was kind of disappointing because the game really didnt have any of that in it, which was what I was looking for. Overall though it kept a decent pace with action and kept me interested for a decent movie.

Here is a link to the imdb for a list of the actors and a full plot line and Photos!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467197/

This movie is a "Renter"
